John Lewis (Johannes) Kahler (1855-1915)

John Lewis was born in Sayville, Long Island, New York in 1855. He was the second child of Carl W. Kahler (1820-1889) and Johanna Meyers (1819-1881). Carl had an older brother, Otto Hendrick (1848-1928) and two younger siblings, Louisa (1857-1907) and Christopher (1860-1946), were born while they lived in Chicago, Illinois. His family had settled back in Sayville, Long Island, New York before the 1870 census.

John Lewis married Betsey Broere (1857-1938), the daughter of Bastian Broere (1824-1904) and Gertruida DeGroot (1822-1907), both who are from the Netherlands and settled in the United States in 1849.

John Lewis and Betsey had eight children that survived into adulthood — Hattie G. (1874-1957), Charles (1878-1941), John Lewis Jr. (1880-1949), Bastian (1883-1949), Arthur Cornelius (1886-?), Raymond Christopher (1889-1966), Clarence (1896-?), and Mildred (1902-1985) — plus thee that died in infancy — Bessie C., Ethel, and Bertram O.

John Lewis died in 1915 in Sayville, Long Island, New York.
